I love nicholas sparks. He has a way of writing that it seems as if you are inside the book with him.
The first book I ever read by him was A WALK TO REMEMBER, it was phenomanal.
I recently just read THE NOTEBOOK, another phenomanal book.
The way he writes, tugs at your heart strings, and makes you laugh, cry and more.
He is a very passionate writer. I love his work. I can't wait until his next best seller comes out :)
Terry Pratchett, all the way, ridiculously funny, very cool characters subtle but witty comentary on society, magic hillarious converstaions and, at times, actual story lines .. you can't beat him. I'm weird because I don't like reading romantic stuff or dramatic things. When I want to read a book I want to, precisely, get away from all that :) I prefer experiencing it first hand I guess, still some romance books can be good e.g. Martin and Viktoria, but I think it was never translated into English (Danish originally) but a very beautiful love story with very cool setting and music comentary. :) Let me also recommend "teach Yourself c++ in 21 days" especially if you suffer from ensomnia, this book will cure that, I promise. ;)
I saw the movies for A Walk to Remember and The Notebook. They were great. I haven't read the books yet, but I'm glad to know they're just as good if not better.
I'm just in awe that a guy can write the sort of things Sparks writes. I cried so much after I read the Notebook, but my friend has a way of recommending stuff like that for me. hehe

............................................................
The Islanders by Scottish writer Margaret Elphinstone
its a tale of familial strife, heartache, tradition and the struggle for survival on Firadey.
A fictional island close to Shetland occupied by a extended Norse family.
The community is shaken by the shipwreck of Astrid from Ireland and their gradual acceptance of her is brilliantly handled,Elphinstone writes the way i would love to.
Duncan McLean.....Blackden
Another highly talented Scottish writer, from Fraserburgh near Aberdeen...............................................
He writes somewhat in the N.E dialect, and for those unfamiliar it would be confusing. But this rich use of language, and his ability to bring each character vividly to life, keeps you hooked. You really do feel for the protagonist as his friendships disintigrate, and his future grinds to a halt, all in all a real cracker.
smile.
Wildebrew
dont you think the Discworld saga has run its course and he should concentrate on something new, maybe he looks at it as a safe way of selling his work,as its now become something of a cult. But I cant help thinking he will be type cast if you like for writing just that and his other work will be forgotten.
Alex
Well, his books are getting a little more bland, after Carpe Jukulem (book 23rd) I haven't found a book I really like but a lot of the books before that are pure works of genius, "Men at Arms" "Witches ABroad" "mascarade" are prime examples. Also I should mentioned "a Series of Unfortnate Events" by Lemony Snicket (his real anme is Daniel Handler), sure it's written for 9 to 12 year olds but the humor and sarcasm in those books please synics of all ages. :)
cheers

Aussie gal .. did you ever read Terry Partchett's "the Last Continent", he makes endless fun of Australia in it, in a good way, and it's absolutely hillarious. :) I need to check out some of the books you mentioned since it seems we have a somewhat similar taste. :)
Hi Catwoman,
My favorite authors are: Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Phyllis a Whitney, catherine cookson, Madeleine Brent, v c andrews, Victoria Holt, catherine gaskin, Marian Babson, Dorothy Eden, and Taylor Caldwell. That's all the names I can think of right now. I've read a lot of books by most of these authors, but can't think of most of the book titles. My favorite type of reading is suspense, gothics and ghost stories, mostly anthologies.
